ps.. the postcard collection is growing!

beans from brenda

I was very surprised and excited on Monday to find that a parcel had arrived at Michael's place. Could it possibly be the long-anticipated can of beans that Brenda sent me about 3 months before for a cost of $12? I was excited as we walked to the front desk to collect the parcel.. if it was the beans, that would be exciting, and if it was something else, well then it was a mystery package and that was perhaps even more exciting. I had basically given up all hope that the beans would ever arrive when I got back from Malaysia, which was about 2 months after they were originally sent.

Well, sure enough, beans it was. The package appeared to have been savagely attacked by customs and quarantine officers.. I suppose they can't really be blamed for being suspicious, as I don't imagine cans of baked beans are sent to Australia every day. Furthermore, there was a very bean-y message written all over the can in Brenda's hand, which possibly could have been taken as some sort of cover up if the contents were not in fact the benign baked beans they claimed to be. Or perhaps a public revolt was feared if the Australian people were to discover the goodness of beans in molasses that have been denied them for so many years. Perhaps the bilingualism of the can was frowned upon. Actually I had begun to suspect that the customs officers decided to eat the beans themselves!

But now all such fears and conspriracy theories must be laid to rest, as it turns out that it just takes a very long time for a can of beans to make it into the country. I wonder if it would take as long for me to send can of beans to Canada...

Today, the can was opened. Michael got his first taste of Canadian baked beans. I must admit that even I found them a bit unusual after so many months of only tomato-sauce beans. They seemed more sweet and more potent than I had remembered them. I hope they haven't changed the recipe! But alas I fear it is probably just me. My tastes have adapted to the inferior Australian offering and now the luxury of true beans is lost on me! What a sad day this is. Oh, I should also mention that the great Canadian bean was lost on Michael as well - his first taste was accompanied by the wrinkling of the nose and the cockeyed look that expressed his disgust with this taste sensation so foreign to his palate.

My only hope is that on my return I will be speedily re-acclimatized to beans in molasses and that I will once again appreciate the true canadian baked bean.
