birthday camp

Ok, it's still a little early. My birthday is still about 34 hours away or so. But it was not so convenient as to fall on a weekend this year, which is why I celebrated early.

Saturday afternoon, Deb, Andre and I piled into some kayaks at Deep Cove and paddled off for a sunny weekend adventure. Our first destination was Jug Island where we got out a frisbee and, after proving that it does float no matter how it happens to land, we had a fun game of throw and paddle after the frisbee. I suppose a few catches may have been involved too, but the kayaks were rather reluctant to jump or dive, and the boat-based throws tended to be a wee bit erratic. We then proceeded to Beaver Island, better known as Raccoon Island, where we luckily made no rendezvous with rabid saltwater beavers. By this time our bellies suggested that we complete the short paddle to twin islands to set up camp.

Dinner was a fabulous feast of homemade Chinese dumplings (the stuffing was made at home, but we wrapped them at camp). Unfortunately my camera is currently at Future Shop not being repaired so I don't have any pictures but Deb and Andre's will be available eventually, I imagine :). After dinner, a can of pineapple rings was brought out and a camp oven was assembled and before I knew it Deb and Andre were preparing one of my favourite birthday treats - pineapple upside down cake! We played some Scrabble on our picnic rock while it baked. yum yum!

By this time we were thoroughly satiated, so we went down to the dock to spit and wriggle twigs and toss rocks in the water. These may sound like unusual activities, but they managed to captivate our attention for quite some time. We were, of course, playing with phosphorescence, and it was incredible! We also watched a glow of northern lights to our north and managed to see a shooting star.

By this time we were pretty well exhausted, but we got started playing with my birthday present, which was a game of dungeon exploration.. we were a little too sleepy to finish it though.

This morning we woke up to a breakfast of hot chocolate and apple pie then played some more games while we waited for Em and Cynthia to show up for lunch. Come they did, and another feast ensued. By the time we hopped back in the kayaks, the sun was at full power, and we had a nice paddle back to the cove.

Oh and of course I shouldn't forget that we stopped for some ice cream in Deep Cove :)

Altogether a fantastic weekend.. I think I might spend more of my birthday camping trips on the water in years to come.
